From the Mailbag - December 2015

From: Richard Perlman

 Subject: Trenton

Just read the story in NJJN. Glad to know you're keeping it alive.
Meanwhile, tell me when I can buy the book.
I'll order it, put some bridge money in your pocket.
 Happy Hanukah.
Leaving for Fl. on TUES. Back mid-APRIL.
 When you're old, you're cold.

Dear Art! Yes and yes to your ongoing mission for promoting, advancing  the acts that sharpen and deepen our individual and collective power of ….'memory.'
In this spirit, I want to share an adage that very recently came to my attention, with credit to the great, internationally renowned Israeli(South African born) educator: Avraham Infeld—recalling the past is not so much history as it is memory. In this spirit, I cite a revered colleague, and  esteemed teacher, Professor Michael Meyer, Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati. The Jew speaks less in terms of "history" than  TOLDOT, expressing  the human chronicles  of one's culture.  At the core of course is  the root,

י  ל   ד

A major part of my own personal creed!

Blessings  for Shavua tov, as we pray for moments of respite from the tragedies of the day to day and hour to hour, extending condolences to loved ones of all those dear  who have fallen, and prayers for healing for all those injured in acts of terror.

In friendship, dear Art

Paul (Shaul)

Even though I am not a Trentonian, I do remember the names of my patients.

Dear Art-congratulations on the publication, Shofar..........., and on all your other researching and writing! May this year continue to be ever renewing for you and Linda—with fond regards, blessings for good health. I am especially grateful for each  Trentonian update, uplift. If you haven't noticed……..I am great nostalgia for the  home of my upbringing on to the four years I spent "on the banks of the Old Raritan, where olde Rutgers ever more will stand……… That was not just an aside: I recently received a copy of the Jubilee Year Book, though I missed being present in April for the Jubilee celebration. So much to lift the spirits, though my first two years were hardly anything "to write home about,"(though I did plenty of that too!) Actually, notwithstanding some bitter frustrating times, ALL my years were wonderful.
I was delighted also with the fruitful exchanges you and Eli have had in recent months.
L'shana tova!!!

Hi Art ! Thanks for posting a proud time for Scotty. Where did you find the original spelling of our name??? (our bakery was under that name!). After graduating from his beloved THS, Scotty went on full athletic scholarship to Perkiomen Prep in PA & then to Washington & Lee University in
Lexington, VA, one of the most prestigious universities in the country & not known for full scholarships for Jewish guys!
He lettered in football, basketball & baseball!!! By junior high he was an orphan & one reason why he never left THS (teaching & coaching) &
Director of Athletics for JCC,
Is that he felt like he should be a Mentor for kids. His teachers & coaches brought him up.

The percentages of Jewish representation among the professions in 1915 dramatically shows an under-representation of Jews proportional their population:

Physicians - 6.3%
Accountants - O%
Lawyers -  1.2%

Clearly, such a low figure bespeaks the lack of education of the immigrants whose sons were obtaining the education they missed.
